Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does reviewing a manuscript take?

On average, reviewing a manuscript takes 3-4 hours, depending on the manuscript length and complexity. This includes time to read the manuscript carefully, evaluate the methodology and results, check references, and write constructive feedback. You'll have 3-4 weeks to complete the review, allowing you to work at your own pace.

Is peer review compensated?

Peer review is traditionally a voluntary scholarly service and is not financially compensated, consistent with academic publishing standards. However, reviewers receive valuable non-monetary benefits including professional recognition certificates, APC discounts (15% off), Publons verification, early access to research, skill development, and CV enhancement. Many institutions value peer review service for promotion and tenure decisions.

Can I decline a review invitation?

Yes, absolutely. You can decline any review invitation if you're too busy, the topic is outside your expertise, or you have a conflict of interest. Simply respond within 48 hours declining the invitation. We appreciate quick responses so we can invite alternative reviewers. You can also suggest other qualified reviewers when declining.

How are my reviews verified on Publons/Web of Science?

Public Health International is integrated with Publons (now part of Web of Science). After completing a review, your contribution is automatically recorded in Publons if you have an account. This provides verified documentation of your peer review activity, which is increasingly valued by institutions. You can display your reviewer profile publicly and track your peer review metrics over time.

What if I need help with my first review?

We provide comprehensive support for first-time reviewers, including a detailed review guide, evaluation criteria checklist, and example reviews. You can contact the editorial office at any time with questions. Many journals also offer mentoring programs where experienced reviewers guide new reviewers. Don't hesitate to ask for help—we want to support your development as a reviewer.

How often will I be invited to review?

The frequency depends on your areas of expertise and the volume of submissions we receive in those areas. On average, reviewers receive 4-6 invitations per year. You can adjust your availability in your reviewer profile to receive more or fewer invitations based on your schedule. We respect your time and won't overwhelm you with requests.
