Overview

Childbirth, or parturition, is the physiological process by which a fetus and placenta are delivered from the uterus at the end of pregnancy. It progresses through defined stages: the first stage of cervical effacement and dilation driven by coordinated uterine contractions, the second stage of fetal expulsion, and the third stage of placental delivery. Childbirth is a central event in Women's Reproductive Health, shaped by maternal physiology, fetal presentation, the adequacy of antenatal and intrapartum care, and the quality of support during labor. Outcomes for mother and infant depend on skilled attendance, monitoring, and the timely management of complications such as obstructed labor, hemorrhage, and abnormal placentation, which may necessitate operative or cesarean delivery. Psychosocial dimensions, including support needs during labor, the experience of pregnancy and birth, and postpartum adjustment, are integral to maternal well-being. Research grounded in this area examines support needs of women in early labor, the relationship between postpartum depression and beliefs about motherhood, antenatal care utilization and its determinants, urinary incontinence in relation to childbirth, abnormal placentation and prior cesarean delivery, breastfeeding promotion, and the transition to motherhood among adolescents. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in Women's Reproductive Health addressing labor and delivery, intrapartum and postpartum care, and the maternal and neonatal outcomes of childbirth across diverse settings and populations.
