Overview

Renewable energy is energy derived from naturally replenished sources, including solar radiation, wind, flowing and falling Water, biomass, geothermal heat, and tidal and wave action, that are effectively inexhaustible on human timescales. In contrast to finite fossil fuels, these sources can supply electricity, heat, and fuels with substantially lower lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions, supporting decarbonisation, energy security, and reduced dependence on imported fuels. Their deployment relies on conversion technologies such as photovoltaic and photovoltaic-thermal systems, power electronics including DC-DC boost converters for solar interfacing, solar thermal collectors and Water heaters, wind turbines, biogas digestion of organic wastes, and hydrogen production by electrolysis. Key engineering concerns include conversion efficiency, energy storage, system integration, and cost. Research in this area examines energy efficiency in buildings, alternative power systems, performance enhancement of photovoltaic and thermal collectors using nanofluids, biogas production from mixed organic substrates, hydrogen generation by alkaline electrolysis, and the role of plant-based and land-management approaches in net-zero strategies. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across renewable-energy technologies, conversion and storage, and their environmental and resource implications, supporting the assessment, optimization, and integration of sustainable energy systems relevant to Water, agriculture, and built environments.
