Overview
A wound is a disruption of the normal structure and function of skin or underlying tissue caused by physical, surgical, thermal, or pathological injury, ranging from acute incisions and traumatic lacerations to chronic non-healing ulcers. Wounds are broadly classified as acute, which progress through orderly repair, or chronic, in which healing stalls, and as open or closed depending on whether the protective barrier is breached. Wound healing is a coordinated biological cascade comprising haemostasis, inflammation, cellular proliferation with angiogenesis and re-epithelialization, and remodelling of the extracellular matrix; the local microenvironment is decisive, and acute and chronic wound fluids exert opposing influences on repair. Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot and leg ulcers are complicated by peripheral neuropathy and impaired perfusion, prompting investigation of neuromodulatory and adjunctive therapies to restore healing. Management spans negative-pressure wound therapy for complex injuries such as open tibial fractures, biological scaffolds and acellular dermal matrices for tissue reconstruction, and the prevention and treatment of surgical site infection, a persistent challenge across surgical disciplines including obstetric procedures. These principles connect directly to Tissue Repair and Regeneration, where the goal is to recapitulate functional tissue. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on wound pathophysiology, healing mechanisms, infection control, and reconstructive and regenerative approaches to wound management.
