Overview
Skin regeneration is the biological process by which the skin repairs and renews itself after injury, restoring its structure and protective function. It involves a coordinated sequence of events, including inflammation, the proliferation and migration of cells, the formation of new tissue and blood vessels, and remodelling, drawing on skin stem cells and supporting cells to rebuild the epidermis and underlying layers. Effective regeneration is essential to wound healing and has important applications in medicine, including the treatment of burns, chronic and acute wounds, and surgical reconstruction, as well as in tissue engineering, where scaffolds and biomaterials are used to support the growth of new skin. The quality of regeneration, and whether it restores normal tissue or results in scarring, depends on the wound environment and the cellular and molecular signals at play. Research published in Tissue Repair and Regeneration reflects these themes, including a study showing how acute and chronic wound fluid inversely influence healing in a three-dimensional in-vitro wound model, and work characterising degraded chitosan scaffolds, a biomaterial relevant to supporting tissue repair.
