Overview
Genomics is the branch of molecular biology concerned with the structure, function, evolution, and mapping of entire genomes, extending the study of individual genes to the full complement of an organism's DNA and its expression. It encompasses sequencing and bioinformatic analysis, the identification of genetic variants and their links to disease, and the integration of genomic data with proteomic, metabolomic, and clinical information. By revealing the genetic basis of traits and disorders, genomics supports diagnosis, risk assessment, and the design of targeted and personalised interventions. Research in this area examines proteomic and genomic techniques applied to cancer, diagnostics, and personalised medicine, the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology, and molecular biomarkers for disease. Studies also explore the correlation of chromosomal features with brain evolution and intelligence, genetic polymorphisms underlying sex-dependent relationships in alcohol-use disorder, and the bioinformatic status of human proteome characterisation. Further work considers the movement from personalised medication toward customised nutrition and conceptual frameworks for organising biological information. By linking large-scale sequence and expression data to function and phenotype through computational analysis, genomics provides the foundation for understanding inherited and acquired disease, identifying therapeutic targets, and advancing systems-level approaches that connect genetic variation to health and biological organisation.
