Overview

Stiffness is a measure of how much a material or tissue resists deformation when a force is applied to it. A stiffer structure changes shape less under load, while a more compliant one deforms more readily. In biology and medicine, stiffness is an important property at many scales: the stiffness of muscles and tendons influences how force and movement are produced, the stiffness of the matrix that surrounds cells affects how those cells behave, and the stiffness of organs such as the liver can reflect underlying disease. Measuring stiffness therefore provides insight into both normal function and pathology. Research collected on this journal spans these dimensions of stiffness. Work includes the mechanical properties and musculo-tendinous stiffness of human muscle, the influence of substrate stiffness on protein expression in retinal cells, and the assessment of liver stiffness in relation to chronic liver disease. Together these contributions illustrate how stiffness is quantified and how it relates to tissue structure and function. As a property central to the mechanics of muscle, tendon, and other tissues, stiffness falls within the scope of Skeletal Muscle and biomechanics research. The page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to tissue and musculoskeletal stiffness.
