Overview
In the context of psychiatric and behavioural research, "mental" refers to phenomena of the mind, encompassing cognition, emotion, perception and the disorders that disrupt them. The term most often appears in the compound "mental health," denoting a state of psychological and emotional functioning that supports thinking, relationships, resilience and the management of stress, and in "mental illness," the diagnosable disturbances of mood, thought and behaviour treated within psychiatry and clinical psychology. Mental health exists on a continuum shaped by biological, psychological and social determinants, and its assessment draws on clinical interview, standardised rating scales and population surveys. Peer-reviewed work indexed under this heading spans the wellbeing and burnout of psychiatric service providers, including affiliate stigma, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among hospital staff; the mental health of medically ill populations such as cancer survivors; disparities affecting marginalised groups including LGBTQ+ youth; the psychological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantine and social isolation; the contested relationship between religion and mental health; and the role of autobiographical memory and identity formation in adolescent development. Across these strands the literature integrates psychiatry, public health, caregiving and clinical psychology, examining determinants, service delivery, coping strategies and interventions that sustain or restore mental functioning across diverse populations and settings.
