In the context of psychiatric and behavioural research, "mental" refers to phenomena of the mind, encompassing cognition, emotion, perception and the disorders that disrupt them. The term most often appears in the compound "mental health," denoting a state of psychological and emotional functioning that supports thinking, relationships, resilience and the management of stress, and in "mental illness," the diagnosable disturbances of mood, thought and behaviour treated within psychiatry and clinical psychology. Mental health exists on a continuum shaped by biological, psychological and social determinants, and its assessment draws on clinical interview, standardised rating scales and population surveys.
