Overview
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental-health conditions characterized by excessive, persistent fear, worry, or apprehension that is disproportionate to actual threat and impairs daily functioning. They include generalized anxiety, panic, phobic, and related presentations, and they involve interacting cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and physiological components, including heightened autonomic arousal. Their development reflects genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and environmental influences, and they frequently co-occur with depression, post-traumatic stress, and physical illness. Management draws on psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and combined or complementary approaches. Research in this area examines mechanisms and treatments, including the role of cholecystokinin in fear and anxiety, the question of whether early painful experience in the neonatal period can trigger persistent anxiety-like behaviour, and network-pharmacology and experimental study of essential-oil interventions for anxiety. Studies address postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and the experiences of clinicians and parents, anxiety in the context of physical illness such as cognitive-analytic therapy for women with breast cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. Complementary and biofeedback approaches, including Reiki for anxiety and heart-rate-variability biofeedback, and broader concerns such as gender disparities in ADHD diagnosis and suicide prevention, are recurring themes. By integrating neurobiological and clinical perspectives, the field informs assessment and care. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to anxiety disorders, their mechanisms, and their treatment.
