Overview
Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, an endocrine organ in the lower front of the neck that produces metabolism-regulating hormones. Because of its location in the head and neck region, it commonly presents with a palpable neck lump or swelling and may cause difficulty swallowing or hoarseness when adjacent structures are affected. The principal types are the well-differentiated papillary and follicular carcinomas, together with medullary and the rare anaplastic carcinomas; most differentiated tumors carry a favorable prognosis when detected and treated early. Management centers on surgery, often with radioactive iodine for differentiated disease and subsequent thyroid hormone therapy, informed by histopathology and molecular testing. Within an otolaryngology and head-and-neck context, research in this field addresses diagnosis, surgical evaluation, biology, and treatment outcomes. Published studies examine secular trends in thyroid cancer incidence and its global increase, long-term outcomes of differentiated thyroid cancer treated with surgery and radioactive iodine, and whether training background influences the adequacy of preoperative evaluation in medullary thyroid cancer. Additional work covers the molecular biology of thyroid cancer cells and the role of thyroid transcription factor-1 in their proliferation, molecular diagnosis and clinical management, histopathological patterns of thyroid disease, the trace-element composition of malignant nodules, image-guided ablation of thyroid tumors, and rare entities such as primary thyroid leiomyosarcoma, reflecting the journal's surgical and clinical orientation.
