Overview

Head and neck surgery is the surgical subspecialty concerned with the diagnosis, operative treatment and functional rehabilitation of disorders of the ear, nose, throat, oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, salivary glands, neck and related facial structures. Closely allied with otolaryngology, it manages inflammatory, congenital and traumatic conditions and, prominently, benign and malignant tumours of the upper aerodigestive tract. A central aim is to achieve disease control while preserving or restoring vital functions such as breathing, swallowing and voice. In laryngeal cancer, for example, partial laryngectomy techniques including supraglottic horizontal and supracricoid procedures are designed to remove tumour while conserving phonatory and airway function, and their comparative functional outcomes guide surgical choice. Operative management of malignancy is often informed by prognostic indicators such as histological type and inflammatory markers like the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. The specialty also encompasses uncommon tumours in unusual locations, reconstructive procedures, and the treatment of conditions affecting the sinuses, ears and cervical structures. Effective practice depends on accurate preoperative assessment, imaging, multidisciplinary collaboration with oncology, pathology and reconstructive teams, and careful attention to postoperative function and quality of life. By combining oncological and functional objectives within a complex anatomical region, head and neck surgery integrates surgical skill, regional anatomy and rehabilitative care to optimise patient outcomes.
