Overview
Tissue transplantation is the transfer of biological tissue, rather than a whole organ, from one site to another within the same individual or between donor and recipient, in order to repair, replace, or restore damaged or missing structures. Transplanted tissues include skin, bone, cornea, heart valves, tendons, blood-forming cells, and many others, and grafts are classified by their source as autografts (from the same person), allografts (from another human), or xenografts (from another species). Success depends on tissue preservation, compatibility, and, for allografts, control of the immune response that can otherwise lead to rejection. Tissue transplantation overlaps with regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, in which cells and biomaterial scaffolds are used to rebuild functional tissue. Research within the scope of organ and tissue transplantation reflects these directions, including work on biocompatible scaffolds for stem-cell transplantation and three-dimensional neural cell culture, emerging stem-cell therapies in regenerative medicine, and engineered scaffolds for bone tissue applications. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to tissue transplantation, grafting, and the regenerative strategies used to restore damaged tissues.
