Overview
Ammonium sulfate precipitation is a widely used technique for separating and purifying proteins and other biomolecules from solution. It relies on the way high concentrations of a soluble salt, ammonium sulfate, reduce the solubility of proteins in water, a phenomenon known as salting out. As the salt concentration is gradually increased, different proteins precipitate at different points, allowing them to be separated according to their solubility. The precipitated protein can then be collected, redissolved, and further purified. The method is valued in biochemistry for being relatively simple, gentle, and effective at concentrating proteins from dilute solutions. Because of its usefulness in protein isolation and enzyme purification, ammonium sulfate precipitation remains a standard step in many laboratory workflows in biochemistry and the molecular sciences. Within the broad scope of New Developments in Chemistry, it connects to research on separation and purification methods, enzyme preparation, and the handling of biomolecules. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to chemistry and the biochemical sciences, offering researchers and students freely accessible scientific work across the field.
