Overview

Nerves are the cable-like structures of the nervous system, each a bundle of axons from many neurons, enclosed by connective tissue sheaths, that conduct electrical impulses between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. They are classified by function as sensory nerves carrying afferent signals of touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception, motor nerves carrying efferent commands to muscles and glands, and mixed nerves containing both, with myelination by Schwann cells accelerating conduction in the peripheral nervous system. Nerves enable sensation, movement, and autonomic regulation, and their compression, transection, inflammation, or disease produces characteristic deficits that inform clinical diagnosis. Research relevant to this area examines the anatomy of cranial and peripheral nerves, including communicating branches of the mental and facial nerves and the course of the posterior tibial nerve, as well as nerve entrapment such as occipital neuralgia and tarsal tunnel involvement. Further work addresses peripheral neuropathy in the context of HIV and diabetes, nerve sheath and soft-tissue tumours, neuropathic pain after surgery, and inherited neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The field connects neuroanatomy, neurology, and pain medicine. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on nerves and the nervous system, including peripheral and cranial nerve anatomy, entrapment and neuralgia, and peripheral neuropathy.
