Overview
A case series is an observational study design that describes the clinical features, course, management, and outcomes of a group of patients sharing a particular diagnosis, exposure, or intervention, without a control or comparison group. Frequently used to characterize rare conditions, unusual presentations, or novel treatments, case series generate descriptive evidence and hypotheses for further investigation. While limited in establishing causation, they remain valuable for documenting natural history, identifying emerging patterns, and informing clinical recognition and subsequent controlled research. Research grouped under this topic comprises descriptive series across multiple specialties. Studies report ophthalmic case series, including chiasmal lesions with ocular manifestations and resolving vitreous hemorrhage in diabetic retinopathy, as well as tumors in atypical locations and maxillofacial, otolaryngological, and dental presentations. Additional series address pediatric fracture management with low-level laser therapy, the role of helmet use in maxillofacial injury patterns among crash victims, congenital anomalies, and complex retinal and vascular conditions. Collectively, this peer-reviewed literature demonstrates how systematically documented patient series contribute to clinical knowledge, supporting recognition of uncommon or instructive presentations and providing a foundation for hypotheses to be tested in larger, comparative studies.
