Overview of Hematology and Oncology

Hematology is the field of medicine that is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the blood and blood-forming organs. This discipline is extremely important for both humans and animals alike.

In humans, hematology is responsible for diagnosing and treating blood disorders, anemia, clotting disorders, and other blood-related diseases. It is also used to diagnose the possibility of cancer and other critical diseases. Additionally, hematology helps assess and diagnose red and white blood cells, platelets, and an individual's bleeding and clotting times.

In animals, hematology is an important tool for diagnosing everything from parasites to anemia. Veterinarians will often use hematology as an important tool to diagnose and treat diseases and infections, as well as help assess the quality of their patient’s blood.

Birds are no different when it comes to the importance of hematology. Birds’ immune systems are highly sensitive, making hematology an invaluable tool for assessing the bird’s quality of health.

Oncology is the branch of medicine focused on the study of cancer and the treatment of cancers. This field also covers preventive care, palliative care, genetics, and other related areas of cancer care. Types of cancer include skin cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, uterine cancer, vulvar cancer, head and neck cancer, vaginal cancer, clinical cancer research, fallopian tube cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer. Treatment for each type of cancer involves a multidisciplinary approach and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or hormonal therapy
