Overview

Biotechnology is the applied scientific field that harnesses living systems, cells, and biomolecules to develop products and processes serving medicine, agriculture, industry, and the environment. It is conventionally organized by a color taxonomy in which red biotechnology addresses health and pharmaceuticals, green addresses agriculture and crops, white covers industrial and bioprocess applications, and blue concerns marine and aquatic resources. Foundational techniques include recombinant DNA technology, fermentation, microbial and enzymatic bioprocessing, and the cultivation of microorganisms as biological factories, while contemporary practice is increasingly driven by bioinformatics, genomics, and metabolomics for rational design and optimization. Research in this area examines the biotechnological exploitation of cyanobacteria across agriculture, medicine, and the environment, industrial and biotechnological applications of algae, and yeast-species-mediated bioprocesses yielding diverse bio-products. Complementary work explores the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology, the metabolomic profiling of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and computational drug design spanning in silico, in vitro, and in vivo stages, alongside broader perspectives positioning biotechnology as a response to climate-change challenges. These themes reflect the convergence of microbial bioprocessing, sustainable bioresource use, and data-driven discovery that defines modern biotechnology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across these molecular, microbial, computational, and applied dimensions of the discipline.
