Overview

Nutrition is the science of how food and its constituent nutrients are consumed, digested, absorbed, and used by the body to sustain growth, maintain tissues, and support health. It encompasses the study of macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals, and the broader relationships between dietary patterns, lifestyle, and physiological function. Adequate and balanced nutrition is fundamental to development, immune function, and the prevention and management of disease, while imbalances—whether deficiency, excess, or poor diet quality—contribute to conditions ranging from undernutrition to obesity and chronic non-communicable diseases. Nutrition science integrates clinical, public-health, and basic biological approaches, examining how diet influences chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, how nutritional interventions can be tailored to communities, and how emerging fields connect food to molecular and microbial processes. The journal publishes research across these domains, including studies of vegetarian and dietary patterns, nutrition education in schools, culturally tailored interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk, the relationship between epigenetics, the microbiota, and diet, nutritional assessment and feeding in clinical and resource-limited settings, and the nutritional status of specific populations such as adolescents. Key aspects include dietary assessment, nutrition education and behaviour change, clinical and community nutrition, and the links between diet and long-term health.
