Overview

Nutrients are the chemical substances in food that the body uses to grow, function, and maintain health. They are commonly divided into macronutrients, namely carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which supply energy and structural material, and micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals required in smaller amounts to support metabolic, immune, and physiological processes. Adequate and balanced nutrient intake is essential for development, energy production, tissue repair, and the prevention of deficiency-related and chronic diseases, while imbalances can contribute to malnutrition or to conditions such as obesity and diabetes. As the central focus of nutritional science, the study of nutrients spans their sources in foods, their roles in the body, and how dietary patterns affect health across populations. Research relevant to this topic in the International Journal of Nutrition includes work on the impact of nutrients on diabetes, the principles of a balanced diet illustrated through the food pyramid, the place of vegetarianism in food-based dietary guidelines, the mineral content of indigenous spices, and the micronutrient value of lesser-known leafy vegetables. Together these reflect both the fundamentals of nutrient science and applied dietary research. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
