Overview
Macronutrients and micronutrients are the two broad classes of dietary components the body requires for health. Macronutrients, comprising carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, are needed in large amounts and supply energy and the structural and functional building blocks for growth, metabolism, and tissue repair. Micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals required in much smaller quantities, do not provide energy but are indispensable cofactors and regulators of countless physiological processes, supporting immune function, bone health, oxygen transport, and cellular metabolism. Both adequacy and balance matter: deficiency or excess of either class can impair development, weaken immunity, and contribute to disease, so dietary patterns are evaluated for the quantity and quality of the nutrients they deliver. The research gathered here addresses the intake and adequacy of these nutrients across populations and contexts. Studies of complementary feeding examine context-specific recommendations to meet the macro- and micronutrient needs of young children, while work on serving sizes and balanced-diet frameworks, such as food-pyramid principles, addresses how dietary guidance translates into appropriate nutrient intake. Other contributions consider strategies to improve micronutrient intake through dietary diversity and the influence of diet on immune and metabolic function. Together these works frame macro- and micronutrient nutrition as the foundation of a balanced diet, in which sufficient energy-yielding nutrients and an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals jointly sustain health and prevent deficiency-related disease.
