Overview
International and community nutrition is the branch of nutritional science concerned with the dietary intake, nutritional status, and food security of populations and communities, particularly across different countries and social settings. Rather than focusing on the individual alone, it examines how socio-economic conditions, culture, environment, and public health systems shape what people eat and how well-nourished they are, with the aim of preventing deficiency, malnutrition, and diet-related disease at the population level. Research published in the International Journal of Nutrition reflects this population-centred focus. Studies assess the nutritional status of reproductive-age women in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and of women and children in Rajshahi, examine factors influencing dietary diversity among adolescent pregnant women in south-eastern Tanzania, and explore beliefs around exclusive breastfeeding among low-income women in South Korea. Further work addresses vitamin A deficiency among rural pre-school children in South India, environmental sanitation and nutrition among women and children in West Bengal, barriers to healthy eating perceived by low-income parents, and field approaches to nutritional assessment in rural Uganda. Together these contributions span maternal, child, and community nutrition across diverse international settings. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to international and community nutrition.
