Overview

Health and nutrition describes the intricate connection between what is eaten and the state of health, in which dietary patterns and the supply of energy and nutrients influence metabolism, immunity, growth, and susceptibility to disease. The relationship operates throughout the life course: undernutrition and micronutrient deficiency impair development and resistance to illness, while imbalanced or excessive intake contributes to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions. Nutritional status is at once an outcome of food access, economic circumstance, and behaviour and a driver of subsequent health, making the interface between diet and health a central concern of nutritional and public-health science. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines the nutritional status and health outcomes of women and children, culturally tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk, the dietary diversity and nutritional status of pregnant women, childhood micronutrient deficiency in relation to economic status, infant and young-child feeding beliefs and practices, and the nutritional status of marginalized occupational groups. Studies draw on cross-sectional surveys, qualitative inquiry, intervention research, and national survey data across varied populations and settings. Collectively this work links dietary intake and nutritional status to health and its social determinants. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in nutrition addressing the relationship between diet, nutritional status, and human health.
