Overview
Dietary pattern analysis is an approach in nutrition science that examines the combinations of foods and nutrients people habitually consume, rather than focusing on a single food or nutrient in isolation. By characterizing whole eating patterns, researchers can capture the cumulative and interactive effects of diet on health outcomes, identify typical patterns within populations, and relate those patterns to factors such as body weight, metabolic status, and disease risk. This peer-reviewed, open-access research collection includes work that examines real-world eating patterns. Published studies have analyzed the food intake patterns of obese older patients in relation to food energy density and weight management, and have documented the dietary intake patterns of individuals in rehabilitation settings. Such studies illustrate how describing and comparing patterns of consumption can reveal links between habitual diet and health. Together with the journal's broader nutrition research on dietary quality, nutritional status, and intake assessment, these contributions provide a grounded reference for understanding how dietary pattern analysis is applied to characterize what populations eat and how those patterns relate to wellbeing.
