Overview

Cellular nutrition refers to the study of how nutrients are absorbed, transported, and utilized at the cellular level to support fundamental biological processes including energy production, growth, repair, and protection against damage. Research published in the International Journal of Nutrition examines several dimensions of this topic, including the role of functional foods in delivering bioactive compounds that influence cellular function, and the complex interactions between dietary components and the gut microbiota that affect nutrient availability and cellular health. Published work has explored how microbiota knowledge can inform optimal dietary strategies for health maintenance, as well as the relationship between nutritional antioxidants and oxidative stress at the cellular level, particularly regarding telomere integrity and biological aging processes. The journal has also addressed how dietary interventions can influence cellular mechanisms relevant to disease prevention, including colorectal cancer, where nutritional factors interact with cellular pathways involved in cancer development. Understanding cellular nutrition is essential because it provides the mechanistic foundation for how dietary choices affect health outcomes, bridging the gap between whole-food consumption and the molecular events that determine physiological function and disease risk.
