Overview
Casein is the primary protein found in mammalian milk, comprising approximately 80% of the protein content in cow's milk and serving as a fundamental component in dairy products and various food formulations. Research published in the International Journal of Nutrition has examined casein from multiple perspectives, including its role in dietary interventions, immune function, and comparative nutritional studies. The journal has published systematic reviews investigating gluten-free and casein-free dietary approaches in autism spectrum disorders, analyzing evidence from over two decades of clinical research. Additional studies have explored how dairy consumption, including casein-containing products, may influence vaccine immune responses and immunoglobulin levels. The journal has also featured research on high-protein diets containing casein in relation to exercise-induced muscle development, as well as comparative analyses examining functional properties of alternative protein sources alongside traditional dairy proteins. This body of work reflects casein's significance as both a nutritional component in human diets and a subject of investigation in clinical nutrition, immunology, and food science, addressing questions relevant to dietary planning, food allergies and sensitivities, athletic nutrition, and the development of alternative protein products.
