Overview
Cardiovascular disease and nutrition concerns the influence of diet on the development, prevention, and management of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure, is strongly shaped by modifiable factors, and nutrition is among the most important. Diets high in saturated and trans fats, excess salt, added sugars, and highly processed foods are associated with raised blood pressure, unfavorable blood lipids, weight gain, and insulin resistance, all of which increase cardiovascular risk. In contrast, dietary patterns rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fish, and unsaturated fats, such as the Mediterranean diet, are linked to lower risk and improved metabolic profiles. Nutritional and lifestyle interventions are therefore central to both preventing cardiovascular disease and managing it in people already affected. The International Journal of Nutrition, the OpenAccessPub journal hosting this page, publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research on diet and chronic disease. Related OpenAccessPub work has shown that a culturally tailored nutrition and lifestyle intervention can reduce cardio-metabolic risk factors, and has explored cultural dimensions of the Mediterranean diet. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cardiovascular disease and nutrition.
