Overview
Applied human nutrition is the practical application of nutritional science to improve dietary intake, nutritional status, and health in individuals and populations. It translates knowledge of nutrient requirements, food composition, and metabolism into interventions such as nutrition education, dietary counselling, food-based strategies, and programme design, and it relies on assessment methods including dietary recall, anthropometry, biochemical markers, and population surveys to characterize intake and need. The field spans the life course and a range of settings, integrating physiology and biochemistry with behavioural and social science to address both undernutrition and diet-related chronic disease. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines the impact of combining nutrition education with active food choice on children's fruit and vegetable consumption, the nutritional status and knowledge of adolescent girls, culturally tailored interventions to reduce cardio-metabolic risk in migrant communities, the relationship between diet and the gut microbiota, the toxicological significance of biogenic amines in foods, and novel digital tools for dietary assessment. Risk factors for childhood stunting and the ethical dimensions of nutrition research are also addressed. These studies employ intervention trials, cross-sectional surveys, and methodological evaluations across diverse populations. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research applying nutritional science to dietary practice, public-health nutrition, and the prevention and management of nutrition-related conditions.
