Overview

Animal nutrition is the branch of nutritional science concerned with the dietary nutrients and feeding strategies required to sustain growth, reproduction, health, and production in animals. It studies the supply, digestion, absorption, and metabolism of energy, protein, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins, and how requirements vary with species, physiological state, and production goal. Central concepts include the partitioning of nutrients between maintenance and productive functions, feed evaluation and the measurement of digestibility, ration formulation to meet defined requirements economically, and the role of the gastrointestinal tract, including the rumen in ruminants and microbial fermentation, in transforming feedstuffs into usable nutrients. The discipline addresses the bioavailability and interactions of micronutrients, the use of feed additives and supplements, the consequences of deficiency and excess, and the links between nutrition, immune competence, and product quality. Comparative work spans monogastric and ruminant systems and extends to companion, laboratory, and aquaculture species, integrating physiology, biochemistry, and agricultural practice. Methods range from controlled feeding trials and nutrient-balance studies to analysis of feed composition and metabolic biomarkers. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in nutrition and related fields, addressing nutrient function, dietary composition, and the physiological responses that connect intake to health and performance.
