Overview

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, encompassing perception, cognition, emotion, motivation, development, personality, and social interaction across the lifespan. As a discipline it draws on experimental, observational, and clinical methods to describe, explain, and predict how individuals think, feel, and act, and to develop interventions that promote well-being. Its major branches include cognitive psychology, which examines memory, attention, and reasoning; developmental psychology, which traces change from childhood through ageing; clinical and counselling psychology, which address mental disorders and adaptation; and positive psychology, which studies the conditions and processes underlying flourishing rather than dysfunction. Applied work frequently centres on evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and on self-regulation strategies including self-monitoring and adaptive behaviour change. Research also investigates emotional functioning, the consequences of repression and stress for physical and mental health, identity and meaning, and the cultural and contextual factors that shape psychological experience. Theoretical concerns range from how abstract concepts are represented in thought to the role of memory in identity. By integrating empirical evidence with theory, psychology informs clinical practice, education, and public health, and contributes to broader understanding of human nature and adaptive functioning.
