Western Equine Encephalitis Virus

Western Equine Encephalitis Virus (WEEV) is a type of mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe neurological disease in humans and horses. It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and is most commonly found in western and central United States. WEEV is an important cause of illness and death in humans, especially in children and the elderly. In horses, it can cause paralysis, seizures, and even death. Vaccines are available to help prevent WEEV infections in humans and horses, but there is currently no specific treatment for the virus. Therefore, prevention remains the best way to protect against WEEV infection.
