Overview
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic immune-mediated conditions characterized by persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, the two principal forms being Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In IBD, an inappropriate immune response leads to ongoing inflammation and tissue damage in the digestive tract, producing symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, fatigue, reduced appetite, and weight loss. The disease typically follows a relapsing and remitting course and can significantly affect quality of life, sometimes leading to long-term complications and disability. Diagnosis combines clinical evaluation with endoscopy, imaging such as MR-enterography and computed tomography, and laboratory and biomarker assessment, while management generally involves anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory medications, dietary measures, and monitoring for complications. In keeping with its inflammation-research scope, this journal publishes work relevant to inflammatory bowel disease, including the psychological impact of colonoscopy, MR-enterography in the diagnosis of Crohn's disease, capsaicin as a potential therapeutic adjuvant for intestinal bowel disease, computed-tomography findings in Crohn's disease patients in the emergency department, the anti-inflammatory activities of probiotic bacteria in fermented foods, computational analysis of STAT4 genetic variants in disease, and experimental evaluation of therapeutic formulations in chemically induced ulcerative colitis, reflecting diagnostic, therapeutic, and mechanistic perspectives on IBD.
