Overview

Heart disease is an umbrella term for disorders affecting the structure and function of the heart, encompassing coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, congenital heart defects, valvular and rheumatic heart disease, and cardiomyopathies. It is a leading cause of death and a major source of disability and economic burden, with risk shaped by hypertension, dyslipidaemia, smoking, diabetes, obesity, infection and genetic factors. The category spans ischaemic disease arising from coronary atherosclerosis, structural and valvular conditions that alter haemodynamics, electrical disorders that disturb rhythm, and progressive impairment of cardiac pump function. Evaluation integrates clinical assessment, electrocardiography, imaging, biomarkers and functional testing, while management ranges from risk-factor control and pharmacotherapy to interventional, surgical and device-based treatment. Research collected under this term reflects this breadth: outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in ischaemic heart disease, rheumatic heart disease in regional populations, microRNA strategies in ischaemic heart disease, valvular heart disease in pregnancy, ischaemic heart disease screening in people living with HIV, mitral stenosis from rheumatic disease, gene therapy and heart failure, gene-polymorphism associations with coronary heart disease, assessment of cardiac function and sleep-disordered breathing, and in vitro cardiac-function biomarker studies. The peer-reviewed literature in this area spans the ischaemic, structural, valvular, rhythm and functional disorders of the heart, their risk factors, diagnosis and management.
