Overview

The cardiovascular system is the network of the heart, blood vessels and circulating blood that transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones and metabolic waste throughout the body and contributes to thermoregulation and homeostasis. It comprises the heart, a muscular pump driving pulmonary and systemic circulations, and the arteries, capillaries and veins through which blood flows, with cardiac output and vascular tone regulated by autonomic, hormonal and local mechanisms. Its integrity depends on coordinated electrical activation, myocardial contractility, endothelial function and vascular structure, and its dysfunction underlies hypertension, atherosclerosis, ischaemic and structural heart disease, and heart failure. Study of the cardiovascular system spans cardiac physiology and function, vascular biology, oxidative and inflammatory influences on the myocardium, and the assessment of cardiac performance using functional, imaging and risk-stratification methods. Research grouped under this term reflects these dimensions: effects of smoking and vaping on the cardiovascular system, sudden cardiac death and structural findings, cardioprotective and antioxidant evaluation in experimental models, cardiotoxicity and preclinical safety testing, radical-scavenging activity in cardiomyoblast cells, in vitro assessment of cardiac function using cardiomyocyte lines, and population cardiovascular risk scoring. The peer-reviewed literature in this area examines cardiac and vascular structure and function, the determinants of cardiovascular health, and methods for evaluating myocardial performance and risk.
