Overview

Oxidative stress is a biological condition that arises when the production of reactive oxygen species and other free radicals exceeds the capacity of the body's antioxidant defences to neutralize them, leading to oxidative damage of lipids, proteins, and DNA. This imbalance disrupts normal redox signalling and has been implicated in tissue injury, inflammation, aging, and the development of numerous chronic diseases. In ophthalmic and broader biomedical research relevant to glaucoma, oxidative stress is studied as a contributor to cellular and tissue damage and as a target for antioxidant protection. Research collected here investigates how oxidative stress is induced and measured in experimental models, including damage to testicular tissue, neurons, liver, and astrocytes, and how it relates to apoptosis and inflammatory mediators such as tumour necrosis factor alpha. A prominent strand evaluates protective and antioxidant interventions, including the cytoprotective effects of resveratrol and quercetin, plant- and mushroom-derived compounds, fennel oil, and the role of antioxidant micronutrients in metabolic syndrome. Additional work examines oxidative stress in relation to telomere attrition and biological aging, the effects of fasting and environmental exposures, and ozone-related redox modulation. Together these topics reflect oxidative stress as a unifying mechanism of cellular injury studied across multiple tissues, with strong emphasis on antioxidant defence and its potential to mitigate disease-related damage.
