Overview

Opportunistic infections are infections caused by pathogens that ordinarily cause little or no disease in people with healthy immune systems but become harmful when the body's defenses are weakened. They commonly affect individuals with HIV/AIDS, those undergoing cancer treatment, organ-transplant recipients on immunosuppressive drugs, and others with compromised immunity. Because the immune system is unable to keep these organisms in check, opportunistic infections can become severe or life-threatening, making their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment a central concern in clinical microbiology. Research in this area examines the organisms responsible, the populations at risk, and the management of infection in immunocompromised patients.
