Overview

Experimental design is the systematic planning of an investigation so that it yields valid, reliable, and interpretable answers to a research question while minimising bias and the influence of confounding factors. It involves defining hypotheses and variables, choosing appropriate controls and comparison groups, and applying principles such as randomisation, replication, blocking, and blinding to ensure that observed effects can be attributed to the factors under study rather than to chance or systematic error. Sound experimental design also determines sample sizes adequate for meaningful statistical analysis and structures data collection to support the intended conclusions. These principles apply across in-vitro studies in controlled laboratory systems, in-vivo studies in living organisms, and in-silico studies using computational models, each of which presents distinct considerations for control, variability, and reproducibility. Within this journal's scope spanning in-vitro, in-vivo, and in-silico research, rigorous experimental design is the foundation on which credible findings in all three settings rest. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to experimental design and the methodological standards that support trustworthy scientific results.
