Overview

Sudden cardiac death is an abrupt, unexpected death caused by a sudden loss of heart function, most often the result of a life-threatening arrhythmia in which the heart's electrical activity becomes disordered and it can no longer pump blood effectively. Common underlying causes include coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathies, inherited electrical disorders, and structural heart abnormalities. Without immediate intervention such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, sudden cardiac arrest is rapidly fatal, which makes recognition of risk factors and warning conditions a priority in cardiology. Research published by OpenAccessPub journals examines several conditions associated with sudden and unexpected death. A retrospective autopsy study investigates thymic hypertrophy in sudden unexpected death in adults, and a case report describes apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with coronary artery anomalies, a structural condition linked to arrhythmic risk. Further work explores obstructive sleep apnea and cervical osteophytosis in a case of sudden death, and the assessment of cardiac function alongside sleep-disordered breathing using ambulatory acoustic cardiography. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access papers gather evidence relevant to the cardiac, structural, and contributing factors involved in sudden cardiac death and its investigation.
