Overview
Ischemic stroke is a type of stroke that occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, usually by a blood clot or narrowed artery, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and causing cell death. It is the most common form of stroke and a major cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. Ischemic stroke can result from thrombosis, embolism (including cardioembolic sources such as atrial fibrillation), or arterial dissection, and shares many risk factors with cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia. Because brain tissue is highly sensitive to loss of perfusion, rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical; modern management relies on neuroimaging such as computed tomography angiography to guide acute interventions like thrombolysis and thrombectomy, alongside secondary prevention and rehabilitation. Research in the field spans risk-factor epidemiology, endothelial and vascular function, genetics, treatment protocols, and systems of care. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research reflecting these themes, including studies on carotid artery dissection causing severe ischemic stroke, CT-angiography-based stroke protocols, endothelial function across stroke subtypes, the association of serum calcium and genetic polymorphisms with stroke risk, anticoagulation after cardiac ablation, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke care and admissions.
