Overview

Congestive heart failure (CHF), commonly termed heart failure, is a chronic clinical syndrome in which the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body's metabolic demands, leading to congestion of blood in the lungs and peripheral tissues. It arises from a range of underlying causes, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, prior myocardial infarction, valvular disease and cardiomyopathy, and presents with symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, fluid retention and oedema. Heart failure is a major cause of hospitalisation and mortality and is increasingly recognised as part of broader cardiorenal and metabolic networks, in which dysfunction of the heart, kidneys and systemic homeostasis are interdependent. Management combines treatment of the underlying cause with pharmacological therapy, device-based interventions and lifestyle measures. Research published in this journal addresses several facets of the condition and its context, including cardiorenal signalling pathways in heart failure, the recognition and management of heart failure in family medicine and primary care, metabolic acidosis and cardiovascular disease in patients on dialysis, and the relationship between uncontrolled hypertension and cardiac outcomes. Related work examines coronary intervention for complex lesions and nutritional considerations across the continuum of care, reflecting interest in the pathophysiology, comorbidities, primary-care recognition and treatment of heart failure and associated cardiovascular disorders.
