Overview
Congenital heart disease is a structural abnormality of the heart or major blood vessels that is present at birth, arising from atypical development of the cardiovascular system during fetal growth. It spans a wide range of conditions, from relatively simple defects such as holes between heart chambers (septal defects) to complex malformations involving valves, the great arteries, or the arrangement of the heart chambers themselves, including single-ventricle physiology and anomalies such as Ebstein's anomaly. These defects can disrupt the normal flow and oxygenation of blood, and their effects range from minor and well tolerated to severe conditions requiring early surgical or catheter-based intervention. Diagnosis increasingly relies on prenatal and postnatal imaging, including fetal echocardiography and three-dimensional ultrasound, while management may extend across the lifespan as more patients survive into adulthood. Long-term concerns include cardiovascular risk factors, heart failure, nutritional status in affected infants, and the conduct of complex cardiac surgery. Within the scope of Hypertension and Cardiology, which addresses cardiovascular structure, function, and risk, this page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to congenital heart defects, their prenatal diagnosis, their prevalence, and their clinical and surgical management.
