Overview
Solid tumors are abnormal masses of tissue that arise from the clonal proliferation of cells in organs and structural tissues, distinguishing them from hematological malignancies that originate in blood and bone marrow. They encompass carcinomas of epithelial origin and sarcomas of mesenchymal origin, and their growth depends on sustained proliferation, angiogenesis to supply oxygen and nutrients, evasion of apoptosis, and remodeling of the surrounding extracellular matrix and tumor microenvironment. Solid-tumor research investigates mechanisms of initiation, progression, invasion, and metastasis to develop effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Research relevant to this journal addresses solid-tumor biology and its intersection with hematologic and oncologic disease. Studies include the behavior of solid human tumor cells in various experimental systems, identification of biomarkers for uterine leiomyosarcoma, the perioperative window as a critical interval for minimal residual cancer-cell progression, inflammatory infiltrates in mammary carcinoma, characterization of geriatric oncology populations, lactate dehydrogenase as a marker of disease burden in lymphoma, angiogenic markers including Tie2, CD14, and angiopoietin in hepatocellular carcinoma, and breast-carcinoma growth dynamics. Related work examines circadian regulation in cancer stem cells and immunomonitoring of cancer. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical, pathological, and molecular research on solid tumors and their progression.
