Overview
Cancer surgery is the use of operative procedures to diagnose, stage, remove, or palliate malignant tumors, and it remains one of the principal modalities of cancer treatment alongside chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and other systemic therapies. Surgical oncology spans curative resection of localized tumors, management of the perioperative period, control of complications, and the relief of cancer-related symptoms, and it requires careful attention to residual disease, patient fitness, and postoperative recovery. Hematology and Oncology Research has published peer-reviewed work across these themes. One study examines the perioperative period as a critical window for the progression of minimal residual cancer cells, reviewing biological and molecular evidence relevant to surgical timing and outcomes. Another investigates how preoperative and postoperative N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide levels predict cardiac morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection, addressing surgical risk assessment. A further article considers the prerequisites for emergency laparoscopic surgery in colorectal cancer, while another explores the management of post-mastectomy pain, a common consequence of breast cancer surgery. Together these contributions reflect clinical and translational dimensions of operative cancer care. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cancer surgery published in the journal.
