Overview
Breast cancer is a malignancy that develops when cells in the breast tissue, most often in the milk ducts or the lobules, grow uncontrollably and form a tumor that can invade surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body. It is one of the most common cancers in women and can also occur, less frequently, in men. Outcomes depend strongly on the stage at diagnosis and on the tumor's molecular characteristics. Breast cancers are classified by features such as hormone-receptor and HER2 status, which guide prognosis and treatment; triple-negative disease, lacking these receptors, is generally more aggressive. Management may combine surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted agents, and the psychological burden of diagnosis and treatment is increasingly recognized as part of comprehensive care. Research in this journal and across related OpenAccessPub titles reflects these dimensions, including risk factors associated with breast cancer, analysis of prognostic variables in triple-negative breast cancer, the role of chemokines and the CXCR4 receptor in metastasis, in vitro studies of anticancer compounds such as alendronate and damsin derivatives, the use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in metastatic disease, and the mental-health and psycho-oncological needs of breast cancer patients across different populations.
