Overview

Metabolic pathways are ordered series of enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions through which cells convert substrates into products, releasing or storing energy and generating the intermediates required for growth, maintenance, and signaling. They are broadly divided into catabolic pathways, which break down nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins to liberate energy as ATP and reducing equivalents, and anabolic pathways, which consume energy to build macromolecules and cellular structures. Central routes including glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, beta-oxidation, and amino-acid metabolism are interconnected through shared metabolites and tightly regulated by allosteric control, hormonal signals such as insulin, and enzyme expression. Coordinated flux through these networks maintains metabolic homeostasis, and their disruption underlies disorders such as familial combined hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and the altered metabolism that sustains cancer cell proliferation. Metabolomic profiling, which measures the small-molecule complement of cells and tissues, has become a key tool for mapping pathway activity, assessing environmental exposure, and identifying biomarkers. Themes in the associated literature span lipid and glucose metabolism, the metabolic basis of obesity and insulin resistance, microbial and yeast bioprocessing, targeting tumor cell metabolism, and the nutritional modulation of metabolic disease. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research on metabolic biochemistry, glycobiology, and the regulation of cellular metabolism.
