Lipid metabolism is the set of biochemical processes by which the body digests, transports, synthesizes, stores, and breaks down fats, including triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol. Dietary lipids are broken into fatty acids and glycerol, which can be oxidized to release energy, reassembled into storage fat in adipose tissue, or used to build cell membranes and to make hormones and signalling molecules. Carefully regulated, lipid metabolism balances energy supply with demand, and its disruption contributes to conditions such as obesity, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome.
