Overview
The mitochondrial membrane system consists of two distinct lipid bilayers—the outer mitochondrial membrane and the highly folded inner membrane—that together compartmentalize the organelle and underpin its bioenergetic function. The inner membrane houses the electron transport chain and ATP synthase, generating the proton-motive force that drives oxidative phosphorylation, while its selective permeability and transport systems govern the movement of metabolites and ions. Membrane integrity is central to redox homeostasis, calcium handling, and the regulation of apoptosis through controlled permeabilization, and is a frequent target of oxidative stress and toxic insult. Research in this area addresses isolated mitochondria, membrane potential, reactive oxygen species, and the consequences of oxidative and ischaemic injury for mitochondrial function. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work touching on mitochondrial redox biology, including studies of oxidative stress in isolated mitochondria from sperm and testicular tissue, radical-scavenging and anti-oxidative activity in cardiomyoblast and cell-free systems, and apoptosis and oxidative-stress markers in experimental models. Such work examines how oxidants and protective compounds influence mitochondrial function and survival, reflecting the organelle membrane's role at the intersection of energy metabolism, redox balance, and programmed cell death, and the relevance of these mechanisms to disease and to antioxidant intervention.
