Overview

A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the health of the pregnant person, the fetus, or both faces a greater chance of complications than in a typical pregnancy. Such pregnancies may be identified before conception or develop at any point during gestation, and they call for closer monitoring and specialized care. A range of factors can raise risk, including pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, and certain infections, as well as conditions that arise during pregnancy such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
