Overview
Differential diagnosis is the systematic process of distinguishing a particular disease or condition from others that present with similar clinical, imaging, or pathological features. Research in Etiological Diagnosis addresses the practical challenges clinicians face when confronted with rare or atypical presentations across multiple organ systems and specialties. Published work examines the diagnostic complexities of uncommon neoplasms, including lipomatous masses in pediatric patients, steroid cell tumors of the ovary, and thyroid malignancies such as leiomyosarcoma and metastatic peripheral nerve sheath tumors, where overlapping imaging and histological characteristics can obscure accurate identification. Studies also explore inflammatory and infectious conditions that mimic malignancy, such as cardiac pseudotumors in Behçet's disease, extraosseous plasmacytoma arising in chronic thyroiditis, and splenic hydatid cysts requiring differentiation from cystic neoplasms. Neurological presentations pose additional diagnostic challenges, exemplified by neurosarcoidosis and post-infectious encephalomyelitis, where clinical and radiological findings overlap with other demyelinating or inflammatory disorders. The breadth of these investigations underscores the importance of integrating clinical history, imaging modalities, and histopathological correlation to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure appropriate therapeutic intervention across diverse patient populations and disease states.
