Overview
Solar radiation is the electromagnetic energy emitted by the Sun that reaches the Earth, spanning ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths, and it is the primary energy input driving the climate system, photosynthesis, and the water cycle. As a renewable resource, solar radiation can be captured and converted into usable heat or electricity, making it central to efforts in Energy Conservation and the transition away from fossil fuels. In the context of energy systems and conservation, solar radiation is studied both as an engineering resource and through its interactions with materials and the environment. Research collected here includes the modelling of how concentrated solar radiation interacts with materials, the design of solar water heaters and pre-heating systems, and the development of photovoltaic and photovoltaic/thermal collectors, including the use of nanofluids and power-electronic converters to interface solar panels. Related work situates solar energy within broader themes of sustainable urban development, climate change mitigation, and net-zero emissions, and extends to agricultural and biological dimensions of sunlight, such as crop ripening under modified light, and to the photobiological effects of solar ultraviolet exposure on human skin, including sunscreen efficacy. Together these strands reflect solar radiation's dual significance as a clean energy source and as a fundamental environmental factor influencing materials, ecosystems, and health.
