Overview
Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a widespread inflammatory state of the body that arises when the immune system mounts a generalised response to a serious insult. It is defined clinically by a combination of physiological abnormalities such as abnormal body temperature, raised heart rate, rapid breathing, and an abnormal white blood cell count. SIRS can be triggered by infection, in which case it may progress to sepsis, but it also occurs in response to non-infectious causes including trauma, burns, pancreatitis, surgery, and ischaemia. The underlying process involves the release of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, which, when excessive or poorly controlled, can damage tissues and lead to multiple organ dysfunction. Research relevant to this topic includes experimental work in Sprague Dawley rats in which SIRS was induced using cecal slurry, lipopolysaccharide, and Escherichia coli, with subsequent evaluation of inflammatory serum cytokines and of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in brain tissue following a test intervention. These models reflect the central role of cytokine-driven inflammation in SIRS and the interest in modulating that response.
